What was the project brief?

Brushwood Junior School in Chesham, Buckinghamshire wanted to add two shelters to their facilities. One needed to work as a covered wash area adjoining the building so children and staff could sanitise their hands and wash up in all weathers, and the other had to create a fun picnic area canopy so everyone could enjoy eating outside more often. The institution contacted A&S Landscape and, together, they soon had several attractive options to choose from in order to complete this project.

What were our shelter solutions?

Blue canopy we designed for Brushwood Junior SchoolFollowing talks about the avenues they could explore, Brushwood Junior School decided that the Motiva Mono™ was the right model for their wash area canopy. Thanks to its asymmetric curved configuration, it worked well placed right next to the school building, and the 5000mm X 3000mm measurements provided plenty of space for multiple children to wash their hands in a sink installed beneath the shelter before going to class. Plus, the Ultramarine Blue steelwork and Opal roof created a colourful design that could also protect the pupils and staff from bad weather.

For the picnic area canopy, Brushwood Junior School chose a 5000mm X 5000mm Maxima StarSail™. This dynamic model combines the features of multiple shelter designs to make for both a functional and innovative canopy. This particular product made even more of a statement on the school grounds due to its modern Squirrel Grey steelwork and Midnight Blue roof. Its durable materials and long guarantees would also ensure that the children could experience outdoor dining all year round.

What were the results of the new shelters?

All of the pupils and staff at Brushwood Junior School think that the two canopies are fantastic. The new covered wash area makes maintaining good hygiene much more straightforward, while the picnic area canopy structure makes mealtimes and snack times more fun because they can now take place outdoors – even if it’s raining! A&S Landscape was thrilled that their products have improved facilities and that they are benefiting everyone at the school.

The Elgiva Theatre stages a variety of shows from music to pantomime, and there are many wonderful walks in the surrounding countryside and along the River Chess. How can schools use shade sails?

Playground fabric canopy we installed at Brushwood Junior SchoolAs well as picnic and dining areas, installing shade sails can allow schools to create many different kinds of useful covered spaces. Here are just a few of their applications.

  • Playground canopies – shade sails make for interesting, colourful and practical shelters in playgrounds. They let children have fun outside, no matter the weather, which can have positive effects on their mental health and learning.
  • Outdoor classrooms – many schools are exploring ways to expand their facilities for increasing numbers of pupils, and shade sails are affordable alternatives to expensive extensions.
  • Shelters for visitors – parents and other guests arriving at institutions can stay dry in the rain under these canopies when picking up their children or waiting to enter the building.
  • Relaxation areas – staff can install seating beneath a shade sail to create a tranquil, comfortable outdoor space that can let everyone enjoy some fresh air throughout the year.

No matter how they want to use them, it’s clear that shade sails can be used in a variety of ways and this clever type of shelter can have a myriad of benefits for schools.
