Playground Shade at Lighthall School Birmingham
Read More
As all teachers will tell you, children need to play outside, they need to run off energy and they need fresh air. The limiting factor in the UK can, of course, be our unpredictable weather, so to ensure that the playground was as 'all-weather' as possible, Cann Hall Primary School decided to add not one, but two curved roof canopies to their campus as part of a schedule of improvements.
White
Opal
The first canopy was from the Motiva Duo range, had a symmetric roof and measured 10m x 7.2m. The smaller Motiva Mono canopy had an asymmetric roof and measured 5.1m x 1.5m. Both were constructed from steel and polycarbonate, with White (RAL9010) steelwork and an Opal polycarbonate roof. The durable structures have box profile gutters and downpipes which manage the rainwater effectively.
The children have additional space to be outdoors regardless of the weather and they are quite rightly delighted with their new canopies!
“The site was left tidy and we would highly recommend the installation team, they were a pleasure to work with.”
– Cann Hall Primary School

Classrooms have long been the setting of choice for the majority of schools, but the upsides of outdoor learning are speedily being recognised. You may potentially think that it’s not accomplishable, especially with the temperamental British weather, but with a canopy, teaching outdoors can become a reality. With many configurations available for different uses, any school can install a canopy to turn any outdoor space into a new category of classroom.
For students, new environments can enliven and thrill, producing an increased aptitude to pick up new information. At a young age, normal classrooms can provide little stimulation for school children and educational growth can become underdeveloped. By exploring the use of outdoor teaching, children can find novel and stimulating ways of learning. Fresh air, and the capacity to teach in a far larger space, can open up new doors to the means that lessons are taught and the work which can be completed.
