How big of an issue is childhood obesity and how can this be combatted by teachers and parents

Childhood obesity is debatably at its most critical and one of the more serious difficulties we face all over the world. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it’s one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. This global epidemic is hitting low and middle-income countries, more notably in urban environments. Globally in 2016, the number of overweight children under the age of five was 41 million. Moreover, overweight and obese children have a tendency to stay obese into adulthood and are liable to developing health conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular ailments earlier in life.

Childhood obesity and connected health issues, such as diabetes are generally avoidable. For this reason, the WHO prioritises the prevention of these conditions in youth, especially because bad dietary habits and a inactive lifestyle are among the key causes of noncommunicable diseases. These conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, substantially give rise to the global burden of disease, death and disability.

In addition, many large-scale studies confirm that overweight and obesity in childhood can negatively impact a child’s executive function and academic potential. Children who are obese encounter a large level of bullying amongst peers as well as experiences that lower their esteem, hence posing a risk of developing unhealthy social and emotional factors in children. Social and emotional factors and bad academic experiences that can influence a child through to adulthood.
