Doubletrees School in Cornwall Installs Playground Shelter

What was the project brief?

Doubletrees School in St Blazey, Cornwall was looking for a shelter that could turn into a fun covered area for the special needs children that it taught. The close-knit team wanted it to be colourful so spending time underneath it would always be joyous and uplifting for its students, even if it was grey and miserable outside. The canopy had to be able to withstand the wind and rain, making it an all-weather structure, so everyone could enjoy it whenever they wanted. Plus, it was important that safety measures were put in place so it didn’t present any danger when the children were playing around it. A&S Landscape became the chosen company to carry out this project.

What was our playground canopy solution?

We took the time to discuss with the staff at Doubletrees School what they wanted to get out of the canopy installation, and this resulted in them ordering a Maxima Umbrella™. Thanks to its extensive coverage and typically waterproof PVC fabric roof, this commercial-grade model is a great protector in rainy weather. We added Moss Green steelwork and a Porcelain Green roof, which created a bright and playful design to inspire the same feelings in those around it. The 4000mm X 4000mm specifications meant that multiple children could play under the shelter at once, while the post protector pad would reduce the chances of anyone getting hurt and it completed the look of the product.

What was the result of the shelter?

Doubletrees School loves the new playground canopy. Its brilliant green colours light up the outdoor area, and it has created somewhere the students can truly enjoy spending time outside – whether they’re playing by themselves, chatting with friends or getting creative between lessons. Best of all, they can now continue to get fresh air during these times throughout the year, since the shelter offers such effective protection in bad weather. The staff were impressed with the safety measures we installed too. It was a pleasure to know that our model would help bring joy to children and add to their learning experiences.

Doubletrees School is an Academy that teaches children and young people aged from 2 to 19 who have – as stated on its website – ‘complex and significant needs in the area of cognition and learning as described in the SEN Code of Practice and may be described as having severe/profound and multiple or complex learning difficulties’. It is a member of the Special Partnership Trust, and the staff have a variety of specialist qualifications to help with personalised learning. They were very welcoming to us and we would be more than happy to supply them with another shelter.
