Ysgol Llywelyn Primary School in Rhyl were looking to add a sheltered walkway between the school’s kitchen and dining hall so that the lunch staff could stay dry and would be protected from side winds when moving hot food trollies between the buildings. As they were looking for students to gain full protection from the elements, they were exploring options of a canopy with side panels.
Our final design featured our Motiva Linear™ canopy solution, with two sides of polycarbonate walling for ultimate weather protection. The canopy measures 12000mm X 3800mm, and was designed featuring our Anthracite Grey Duracoat™ on all steelwork and an Opal polycarbonate roof. Our robust Alu-tuff™ guttering system was also used in a matching Anthracite Grey RAL colour to provide drainage. The finished canopy is hard-wearing and modern, and has been a well-welcomed feature to the school.

Here at A&S Landscape, we take time to understand the need for each project, to help us design the best solution. Over our many years in the industry, we can see that the demand for canopies is growing rapidly and for a myriad of reasons.
Firstly, with growing populations, many schools are finding that their pupil intake is on the rise, and outgrowing their existing facilities. This puts pressure on schools to find solutions for additional dining and learning space. Furthermore, the UK is facing much more extreme weathers due to climate change – this includes warmer weather, as well as increased rainfall – therefore schools are in need of additional outdoor coverage to ensure that pupils can make the most of the space all year round. Finally, another popular reason we come across is simply that schools are recognising the benefits and importance of getting pupils outside; outdoor learning is proven to improve social skills, support focus in the classroom, as well as accommodating physical activities to help maintain good health
