Hedgewood School caters for primary school pupils, the majority of which have Autism, so it was important that the large canopy created a safe space on the site.
Moss Green
Sky Blue
Hedgewood School wanted in West London wanted to get better use out of their outside space by adding a weather-proof cover. A&S Landscape, school shelter experts, were asked to help with this project by designing a canopy to cover the area. As a large area was to be covered, it was important to the school that the structure would be aesthetically pleasing and work with the surrounding environment.
After careful planning, our design team suggested we use our Maxima Tepee™ structure. At an impressive size of 10m x 10m, the shelter has created a large amount of covered space for the school to use. The tepee was the perfect option for this project as the design uses a minimal number of uprights. Hedgewood School caters for primary school pupils, the majority of which have Autism, so it was important that the large canopy created a safe space on the site. The school also choose to add post protection pads for an added layer of safety.
To match the school’s colour scheme, the steelwork frame colour was finished in a smart Moss Green. The fabric of the tepee was made from a Sky Blue material which works perfectly with the surrounding environment. So that the canopy can be used all year round, the fabric roof was made with a waterproof PVC material.
The young pupils of Hedgewood School love the new addition to the playground, and it has quickly become a very popular spot. The tensile fabric roof shelter has created not only the perfect playing space but the perfect learning environment too. Teachers can now take their classes outside in an alternative learning space, which will help to engage the pupils and create a memorable lesson.
The tepee has also provided a brilliant sensory environment which will aid the pupils with their learning and development. And the waterproof fabric means that the space can be used come rain or shine.
Hedgewood School is based in the town of Hayes, in West London. The school looks after 180 children, all of whom have an Education, Health Care Plan (EHCP). This fantastic school aims to keep the pupils at the centre of everything they do, helping them to build confidence and create a good work ethic.
A&S Landscape was really pleased to get to work with Hedgewood School and help them to further improve their facilities. Every member of staff, including the Headteacher John Goddard, was a joy to work with too and they have become a very valued client to us.
A common but under-researched matter of social and emotional development in children is understanding the impact of spending time outside and how significant the effects are. For such a vital aspect of childhood, the gaps in research here are somewhat astounding. Not least because, the research that currently exists shows that there is conclusive evidence that outdoor time, like outdoor play, or outdoor classrooms, has a sizable positive impact on a child’s social and emotional development. These initial studies come from multiple disciplines using a vast range of approaches that all lead to the same view.
Specifically, investigations focusing on; risk-taking, sensory skills, confidence, and anxiety flag how outdoor play favourably influences children’s social and emotional development.
