All Faiths Children’s Academy in Kent wanted their pupils to spend more time outside during the school day. When the weather was poor, the pupils had to stay indoors meaning they would get little fresh air and chance to properly refresh. The staff identified an area in the playground which would benefit from the addition of a shelter.
A&S Landscape was asked to propose a shelter which would work with the surrounding environment and provide protection from the weather. Our design team decided upon the Maxima Umbrella™, a stylish fabric model. To match the colours of the school, the roof was made from a Tennis Green material, and the single upright was finished in a contrasting white. So that the shelter could be used all-year-round, a waterproof PVC fabric was used.
Measuring 5000mm x 5000mm, the canopy has created plenty of covered space outdoors. To provide additional safety for the primary school pupils, a post pad protector was fitted the Maxima Umbrella™ in a smart Bottle Green colour.
All Faiths Children’s Academy are thrilled with the finished product! The pupils love to play under the umbrella canopy, and it has become a very popular spot at playtimes. The newly created sheltered outdoor space can also be used to provide new learning opportunities for the pupils during lessons. The outdoor classroom space will become a useful resource during many academic subjects, such as Biology and Geography. In fact, the school are so happy that they rated A&S Landscape five stars for the project.
Located in Rochester, Kent All Faiths Children’s Academy works with around 200 pupils from the local area. The academy aims to nurture successful children, who have the ability to think and act independently and confidently by achieving aspirational goals. We really enjoyed collaborating with such a great team of teachers, and we want to say a huge thank you to every at All Faiths Children’s Academy.
A common but under-researched realm of social and emotional development in children is realising the impact of spending time outside and how significant the effects are. For such a significant component of childhood, the gaps in research here are somewhat astounding. Not least because, the research that currently exists proves that there is conclusive evidence that outdoor time, like outdoor play, or outdoor classrooms, has a sizable positive impact on a child’s social and emotional development. These emerging studies come from several disciplines using a broad range of methods that all lead to the same stance.
Specifically, studies considering; risk-taking, sensory skills, confidence, and anxiety emphasise how outdoor play favourably influences children’s social and emotional development.
