Malet Lambert School in Hull wanted to install six canopies in various locations on their grounds. They were lacking outdoor shelter and needed models which were appealing, strong and effective so they could better use their external spaces and allow students to spend more time outside, no matter the weather. They also wanted the canopies to be adaptable and usable for different purposes, such as socialising and dining. The team at the school contacted A&S Landscape to tackle this venture.
After talking through the benefits of the models available, Malet Lambert School chose to add six Motiva Linear™ shelters to its facilities. This was the winning model because of its versatility and applications for dining areas, playground canopies and everything in between. The staff loved the modern design of its asymmetric straight roof and the product’s overall durability too.
One canopy measuring 15000mm X 4000mm was installed in one of the school’s quads and one measuring 13600mm X 4000mm was installed in another, while two canopies with specifications of 14000mm X 6000mm were added to the Science Block and a pair of smaller canopies with specifications of 8000mm X 6000mm was added to the Year 11 section. They all sported attractive Moss Green steelwork and Opal roofs, creating unity and revolutionising the outside areas across the site, plus top-quality materials that were more than up to the task of shielding students from bad weather while enjoying being outdoors during breaks.
The grounds of Malet Lambert School have been hugely enhanced. The six outdoor canopies offer fantastic, modern shelter so more students can spend time between lessons in the fresh air, which can improve wellbeing and even academic performance. The staff are happy that they are now making good use of the outside spaces available to them, and the canopies can even be used as outdoor classrooms if they want to mix up their teaching environments. A&S Landscape was thrilled that their products had made such an impression and had improved facilities across the school.
Malet Lambert School is a secondary school that upholds the ideal ‘where every pupil matters, where every pupil can succeed’. It ensures that its curriculum reflects traditional values, develops contemporary aspirations and encourages creative curiosity, and that it equips children with ‘the knowledge and skills needed for their future’. A&S Landscape found this client to be pleasant and friendly – one they would love to provide another canopy for in the future.
Malet Lambert School is based in Hull, a historic city in East Yorkshire. The Old Town is bursting with Georgian and Edwardian architecture for eager visitors to enjoy, and the Hepworth Arcade boasts many independent stores that have stood there for years – including Dinsdale’s joke shop and Beasley’s fashion emporium. What’s more, the excellent Maritime Museum brings the city’s nautical history to life, and art buffs have plenty to whet their appetite with several stunning galleries on offer.
Many children and young people today don’t get enough time outdoors, and spending much of their weekdays inside classrooms doesn’t help the matter. However, fitting getting more fresh air into the school day can be beneficial in several ways which can then contribute to better grades.
1. It improves mental health
Being outdoors has been linked to lowered stress hormones and levels of anxiety and depression. It’s also known that having a strong connection with the natural world increases happiness, and all of this makes it easier for students to do better in their studies and be more motivated.
2. It improves physical health
If children enjoy breaks outside, they may be encouraged to take part in activities, games or sports like football, tag or rounders. Plus, time in the sun boosts Vitamin D levels, which helps to protect against diseases including heart attacks and strokes. If you feel better physically and get rid of excess energy through exercise, you can more easily focus on your work.
3. It improves mental faculties
Taking time outdoors has been found to aid attention, memory and concentration – all essential for doing well in school.
4. It encourages socialisation
Breaks in the fresh air allow young people to relax and catch up with friends in a more care-free environment than inside school buildings, which may reduce chatter and distractions during lessons.
Wondering how to give your students these benefits by providing them with opportunities to get outdoors in school time, year-round? Why not try installing a canopy on your site so children can enjoy eating and socialising during break times in the fresh air, without worrying about the weather? Contact A&S Landscape now by emailing [email protected] and we’ll help you to find the ideal model.
