The school has a commitment to the development of their pupils in a happy, secure environment. They place high importance on not just the intellectual growth of their children, but also the emotional, social and physical development. So Milking Bank Primary School wanted to explore how they could optimise their outdoor space to contribute to these aims. With a fairly large area in mind located directly outside the main school building they contacted A&S Landscape for our expert input.
The school wanted to cover an area at the side of an existing building. Because of the existence of doors and windows in the area identified, A&S Landscape recommended the installation of their Motiva Cantilever™ canopy. This is a fabulous product for spaces like this because other shelter types can create restrictions due to the positioning of the upright steel canopy poles.
Finished in a Red (RAL 3030) steel, the new structure matched in with all of the existing school railings and other fixtures. The roof was finished with clear polycarbonate sections, allowing light to flood into the existing windows and doors.
The Motiva Cantilever™ product is a really practical and popular option, not only for playground shelters but also for covered walkways. With the addition of gutters and downpipes on larger structures, rainwater run-off is easily managed, and means that this low maintenance option will provide years of shelter.
There are plenty of benefits of learning outside which help students as well as teaching staff. A point that is generally overlooked is the teacher’s enjoyment of teaching lessons and how the freedom to teach outside can be just as captivating for them as it is for students. Being in an outdoor environment is healthy and creates positivity for teachers which is commonly echoed in their lessons and the way they teach. If a teacher is uninspired, that loss of spirit can carry over into their lessons but putting them in contact with nature can entirely change the way they picture teaching.

The end result of the Milking Bank Primary School cantilever canopy was a really functional covered area in their playground. With enough room beneath for outdoor play, it’s also a useful space for the children to learn outside too.
In its 30 plus year history, Milking Bank Primary School has been a central focus for learning in this Dudley suburb. Over that time, it has shared its motto with children from the local area and encouraged them, ‘To go further than I thought; to run faster than I hoped; to reach higher than I dreamed’. A recipient of the Leading Parent Partnership Award, the school fosters a supportive culture that encourages parents to be at the centre of their children’s learning.
Dudley itself is a great place to grow up. With Dudley Zoo and Castle on their doorstep, the opportunities for learning are all around for the children of this town. To top this off, there’s even the Black Country Living Museum where the children can go and experience life as it would have been through the various ages of this industrial town’s history.
A cantilever canopy offers you a range of options, particularly where there are existing structures that might otherwise be hindered by the installation of steelwork canopy poles. The canopy architecture of the cantilever means that it is fixed in a way that avoids blocking access to doors and windows.
