Myton School in Warwick recognised the importance of encouraging their students to cycle to and from school, and wanted to install a large cycle shelter to accommodate cyclists. They brought A&S Landscape on board to design, manufacture and install a durable, high-quality bike canopy that will last for many years.
Rather than an ‘off the shelf’ cycle store design we were able to look at the available space and number of bikes to be covered and use our wide canopy range to design a shelter solution that worked for the area.
For the curved roof canopy, we opted for a Motiva Duo. This is a duopitch (symmetric) curved roof variant where both sides are at the same height. Measuring 15000mm x 3600mm, the canopy provides essential protection against the weather, keeping the bikes safe from any damage. The steelwork was finished in a smart red colour, which complements the school’s surrounding buildings.
Although our proposed design was not the cheapest option, Myton School felt it was the best value for money. Because we galvanise and powder coat our structures, they are much more durable and longer-lasting than painted alternatives. The school can use its new bike shelter for years to come, making it a worthwhile investment.
The cycle canopy is being put to good use every day and has had a positive impact on the whole school, as well as the local community. With 30 bike racks installed underneath the canopy, the full-size shelter provides enough space to store up to 60 bicycles at one time.
Knowing their bicycles will be stored safely and sheltered from the rain, this has encouraged more students and staff to cycle to and from school, which is a great way for them to stay fit and healthy while doing their bit to reduce carbon emissions. For the teachers, it’s also helped them get their steps in!
With predictions that by 2050 70% of girls and 55% of boys will be overweight or obese, there has never been a more important time to cycle to school. Still, more families than ever are driving their children to school. A Sustrans survey determined that whilst 12% of parents were driven to school when they were growing up, in the present day 35% of children are driven to school, so what has changed?
Parents mentioned over road safety as one of the deterrents to cycling to school, so projects like ‘Bikeability’ where pupils gain the core of road safety are a pivotal step in preparing school children for the cycle to school. Perfecting the route at the weekends when the roads are likely to be quieter is also good preparation.
