Royal Wootton Bassett Academy in Wiltshire Finds Perfect Dining Shelter for its Grounds

What was the project brief?

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy near Swindon wanted to install a dining shelter in its grounds to enable students and staff to enjoy their much-needed breaks outside, throughout the year. This would have great benefits for their health and inject a novel element into lunchtimes and socialising. The team at the school needed the canopy to offer excellent coverage in all weathers, look appealing and inviting, and be large enough to accommodate many people at once. They loved the designs available at A&S Landscape, so they decided to approach the company about this project.

What was our canopy solution?

There were a couple of avenues to explore – thanks to the fantastic selection of shelters and the school’s enthusiasm for them – but Royal Wootton Bassett Academy eventually decided that the Motiva Linear™ was the best fit. This model is popular because of its monopitch asymmetric design and its Dura-coat™ finish which helps it stay looking top-notch for years. The stylish straight roof efficiently keeps out the wind and rain, and the Opal polycarbonate the staff picked out created a modern look when combined with Mint Turquoise steelwork. A&S Landscape even added side panels for extra protection, which would be especially useful in the winter months. Plus, the 20000mm X 8000mm specifications could easily allow many staff and students to sit beneath the canopy and enjoy eating outside undercover.

What was the result of the shelter?

The school thinks that the dining canopy is an incredibly useful addition to its outdoor facilities. Everyone can now experience the health benefits of spending more time in the fresh air by eating or socialising with friends under the dining shelter during their breaks, no matter the season. The design complements the existing buildings and has created an area where the children love to relax. A&S Landscape was thrilled to find out that Royal Wootton Bassett Academy is enjoying the canopy and that the project was such a success for all involved.

About the client

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy is one of Wiltshire’s largest schools, teaching over 1,700 children aged from 11 to 19. It has a successful Sixth Form and was judged to be ‘Outstanding’ in every area during its last Ofsted inspection in 2013. The school is led by its values and aims, and it says on its website that it believes in ‘maintaining a caring community, which encourages courteous and considerate behaviour within an effective and stimulating learning environment’. It also delivers a varied curriculum that prepares students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. The team at the academy was friendly and courteous during the entire canopy installation process. A&S Landscape would be more than happy to provide them with a second product!

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy is situated in Royal Wootton Bassett, near Swindon. It was granted royal patronage in 2011 in recognition of its role in military funeral repatriations, which passed through the town and where local people lined the streets to pay their respects. The town features many beautiful Georgian buildings, Jubilee Lake, and Royal Wootton Bassett Town Hall Museum. Plus, the area is filled with thriving habitats for birds, wildflowers and ancient trees, so residents can experience nature at its finest.

In collaboration with the contractor our team produced two straight polycarbonate roof canopies in Farmborough C Of E Vc Primary School, Farmborough, Bath, Somerset. The job involved the supply and installation of one Motiva™ monopitch straight roof canopy measuring 8150mm X 2500/3400mm and 4500mm X 1900mm.  One Motiva™ monopitch straight roof canopy measuring 3300mm X 2500mm, both included for our Alu-Tuff™ aluminium box profile guttering and downpipes which were coated in a matching Dura-coat™ colour finish.

Working alongside our building contractor client we built a straight polycarbonate roof canopy at Bridgwater College Academy, Parkwaybridgwater ,Somerset, Ta6 4Qy Parkway, Bridgwater, Somerset.
