Skinners’ Academy in London Sources Multiple Shelters

What was the project brief?

Skinners’ Academy in Hackney, London wanted two canopies – one to cover its ramped walkway so anyone utilising it like wheelchair users or parents with pushchairs could enter the building without getting wet in the rain, and one to create a dining space where students could eat outdoors in all seasons. The staff provide a world class education to students aged 11-19 in a state-of-the-art building and so naturally thought the structures should have strong, high-quality designs that complemented the school’s colours and were large enough to offer great protection for many people. They contacted us here at A&S Landscape and we thought carefully about how to proceed to make this project a success.

What was our shelter solution?

We made sure that we understood exactly what our client needed from their canopies and that they were happy with the process before designing two models for them. The first was a Motiva Linear™ measuring 30457mm X 4000mm that perfectly sheltered their ramped walkway with its efficient and classy, monopitch asymmetric roof. Its installation meant that the chance of accidents like slips in wet weather would be reduced for those using the ramp. The second product was a huge 20000mm X 8000mm Motiva Duo™ that had no problem becoming an effective dining canopy under which the community could enjoy eating al fresco year-round. Both shelters were supplied with Opal roofs and Traffic Red steelwork which looked wonderfully bright and on-brand in the outdoor space.

What was the result of the new canopies?

This customer in London was truly impressed with its pair of shelters. Entering the school under the ramped walkway canopy is now a safe, comfortable experience in all weathers, and dining outside is a valuable option for students who need some fresh air between study periods and lessons. The red colour scheme reflects the institution’s branding extremely well and the appealing designs have helped to give the grounds an even stronger visual identity. Plus, the large size of the canopies allows many students to make the most of them. This project was a particularly enjoyable one for us to complete and we wish the staff all the best for the future.
