Springwell Community College in Staveley wanted a dining canopy to transform its outdoor space and dining options for its students. The team there was looking for a shelter that could ease pressure and queues in other facilities so meal times could be a more pleasant experience for their whole community. It therefore needed to have large enough dimensions to be able to seat many people beneath it, and have excellent coverage so that eating outdoors could be experienced in all weathers. The staff also required a sleek, modern design that matched the surrounding area. They got in touch with us here at A&S Landscape and we soon got to work on designing and manufacturing something to meet their needs.
We have a wide range of models available and, after careful consideration, Springwell Community College settled on the ever-popular Motiva Duo™. Many schools ask us to install this particular product as a dining shelter because it works well as a standalone structure and its symmetric curved roof is pleasing to the eye. We added Opal polycarbonate and Slate Grey steelwork to create a contemporary design that was stylish without drawing too much attention away from the existing architecture of the college grounds. What’s more, the 12000mm X 8000mm measurements provided enough room for plenty of students to congregate beneath the canopy during their breaks and enjoy snacks, lunch or a chat with friends. The durable roofing ensured that this could happen in comfort, in any season.
The dining shelter has made break times and lunchtimes more manageable for everyone at Springwell Community College. It has brought an entirely new element to their outside space and stands as a truly impressive structure. Students now have a greater choice of where to spend time between classes. Being able to eat in the fresh air with a little more elbow room at all the dining facilities year-round, thanks to the canopy, is a welcome result too. As a bonus, it could also be used in other ways, such as an outdoor classroom shelter for anything from art to science, or as a covered relaxation area. This project was really rewarding and we hope that Springwell Community College will love using the canopy for years to come.
Springwell Community College is a coeducational secondary school that is regularly oversubscribed due to high interest from families in the local area. The college believes this is because of its high-value curriculum which includes a variety of stimulating subjects, its reputation as a welcoming place to study, its high-quality facilities and its dedication to the arts. We enjoyed manufacturing a canopy for this thoughtful college and are pleased to know that they will enjoy great benefits, thanks to our work.
Springwell Community College is situated in Staveley, a former mining town near Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Chesterfield is known for its 800-year-old open air market and being a wonderful base from which to explore the breathtaking Peak District. It also hosts many live sports events at the Technique Stadium and Queen’s Park, plus exciting shows at the Pomegranate Theatre. Local children and their families can all have a great day out in this area.
Installing a dining shelter can be beneficial in many ways, thanks to how they allow students to spend more time outdoors, regardless of the weather. Being in the fresh air can positively impact physical health by lowering stress hormones and muscle tension, as well as boost memory and concentration. Feeling better both mentally and physically helps young people to focus better on their learning and being happier enables them to enjoy it more, which can consequently result in higher performance.
