The Cheadle College already had great facilities, but the staff felt something was missing. The college decided to install two new canopies, to provide a sheltered outside space for the students.
Basalt Grey - RAL 7012
Opal
A&S Landscape installed two Motiva Linear canopies alongside the school buildings. Each structure measures 7000mm X 3000mm, so plenty of room has been created. Both shelters feature grey steelwork, which fits perfectly with the surrounding buildings. The canopies also have Opal polycarbonate roofing, which offers essential protection against UV rays.
The students can use the straight roof shelters throughout the year, for a variety of purposes. Whether they are socialising during breaks, eating at lunch or waiting for a lesson, they can enjoy some fresh air, while remaining covered from the elements. The school buildings will also be relieved of pressure, as the outdoor space can be used more frequently.
Teachers can also make use of the canopies if they wish to take their lessons outside in an alternative learning environment. This will help to engage the class as they get the opportunity to learn outside of the four walls of the classroom. Giving the students and staff a sheltered outside area has many benefits, and the entire of The Cheadle College will be positively impacted by the canopies. We also installed a bespoke canopy at St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary School in Wigan, Manchester.
As we know, the school-age population has been growing. The figure of five to ten year old pupils in primary schools increased by 446,000 (13%) within 2010 and 2016.
The Department for Education has the task to create the 420,000 new school places that are needed between 2016 and 2021 and there are many ways that this can be accomplished. New schools are being produced, free schools are being funded and existing schools are receiving capital funding to sustain, improve and develop facilities. With funds being stretched, one way that schools are using this capital funding is to make the most of their outside space. Whether to build extra classrooms or to add sheltered spaces which can have a number of different uses.
Some uses of outdoor sheltered areas include:
• Alfresco dining areas
• All-weather sports pitches
• Outdoor classroom
• Cycle Store
• Outdoor theatre
