Two New Outdoor Canopies Installed at Abertillery Learning Community in Monmouthshire

What was the project brief?

Abertillery Learning Community in Monmouthshire, Wales, was formally a college site and became a school when a group of local schools merged into one in 2016. The college site had minimal outdoor coverage, and therefore an installation was needed to better accommodate and shelter the school students during their break and lunch times. When choosing their canopy supplier, they prioritised ensuring the product would be robust and long-lasting, which would provide them with the best value for their investment. Upon receiving this enquiry, A&S Landscape was happy to help and ensure the school’s visions became a reality.

What was our school canopy solution?

After considering several options, Abertillery Learning Community decided on our popular Motiva Linear Lite™ range, and we manufactured it to their bespoke dimensions and colour choices – resulting in two canopies with Semi-Gloss White on the steelwork, and an Opal polycarbonate roof. . Our Motiva Linear Lite™ design features a mono-pitch (asymmetric) roof that works excellently next to buildings (as seen in this example) which directs rainwater, snow, leaves, and other objects like footballs away from the building. The positioning of the two canopies allows them to perform as playground shelters (for pupils and supervisory staff), a walkway canopy (for around the perimeter of the building), and they could also be used as a sheltered area for outdoor seating.

About the client

Abertillery Learning Community was formed in 2016 from the merging of five local schools, turning it into an all-through school (3-16-years) with four sites. Our canopies were installed on the main campus of the Abertillery Learning Community Secondary School; the Headteacher here, Mrs Tracey Jarvis, says that everyone within the school is “committed to giving every learner the best opportunities to succeed both socially and educationally”.
