William Henry Smith School in West Yorkshire wanted to encourage their students to spend time outside during their break and lunchtimes. With students from the age of five up to 19, the school felt it was important that every student has the opportunity to spend quality time outdoors, no matter the weather.
After close discussions between the school and our design team, we decided upon our stylish Maxima Tepee™ shelter. This canopy features four solid steel uprights and fabric roof, creating plenty of covered space underneath. William Henry Smith School decided to finish the posts in a brown red colour, with a light blue roof to match the logo and branding.
Often our tepee shelters are used for outdoor dining areas, sports spaces and social hangouts as there is plenty of space to add tables and equipment. In this case, the school choose to use the shelter as a covered area for the students to gather during their breaks. Measuring 7000mm x 7000mm, there is enough room for many children to shelter from the elements.
The school are very impressed with the new canopy and the project as a whole. In fact, the team awarded A&S Landscape five stars for their work throughout the process. Now the students can get outside and refresh properly, no matter the weather. This is especially important for the older students who need to take the time to relax and unwind between revising and taking exams.
The teachers are also utilising the covered space during their lessons. Without the need to plan around the ever-changing weather, it is now much easier for classes to be held outside in an alternative environment. Thanks to our cutting-edge manufacturing process, we know that the school will be able to enjoy the tepee for many years to come.
“We are more than happy with the canopy and A&S Landscape. The children are enjoying using it.”

We are all aware of the differences between growing up in the modern age compared to 20 years ago. Children have access to technology from a very young age, which can affect how much time they spend playing outdoors. It is very important still for young children to get outside in the fresh air and experience the natural world as they grow.
Physical activity is an important part of everyone’s day, young or old, and doing this outdoors allows children to get their intake of Vitamin D, which has many benefits on their immune system and even their mental health. Studies have also shown that children can also improve their social skills, and even their attention span by playing in a natural environment.
Unfortunately, we are also all aware of the unpredictability of the British weather, meaning that often children don’t get to go outside during the school day at all. This is one of the reasons why many primary and secondary schools are choosing to install a shelter or shade sail structure. By creating a covered area, you can guarantee that there will be a dry and protected space outdoors for the pupils to use.
It is vital to acknowledge the full extend of the needs of every young person whether they are in a mainstream school or a special school, but it is so imperative to acknowledge the personal and emotional needs of a young person. As teachers, we are charged with preparing young people for their next step, be that university, training or work. We have to teach equality and diversity not only for the growing community that we live in, but to help our children learn that no matter what pitfalls they may have beaten in their lives, they have the same chances and the same capability as everyone else.
The only way to do this is to equip our students with the facility to understand their own needs and unaided find their own tactics to overcome their obstacles. We can only accomplish this if we have the means that will aid their development.
