What was the project brief?

Woodlands Primary Academy in Bradwell, Norfolk wanted to install a multi-purpose canopy in their outdoor space to function as an extra dining hall, which could also be used recreationally in playtimes and break times. It needed to be able to protect staff and pupils from the elements so that it could be used throughout the year and have a fun design to brighten up the area.

The school got in touch with A&S Landscape, who was more than happy to help them find the ideal shelter for their needs.

What was our multi-use canopy solution?

Play area canopy we made for Woodlands Primary SchoolA&S Landscape provided information about a range of shelters and Woodlands Primary Academy decided that the Motiva Duo™ would work the best. They purchased a model measuring a huge 15000mm X 11500mm with a symmetric roof design that was perfect for covering their new multi-purpose area and accommodating the requirements of many pupils at once. The Traffic Red steelwork matched the school’s branding and added a splash of colour to the space – it was sure to inspire the children’s energy and creativity when playing outdoors. This was not one of their standard RAL colours, but A&S Landscape went above and beyond to provide Woodlands Primary Academy with their ideal canopy. The sweeping, curved roof of Opal polycarbonate sheeting also offered maximum coverage to shield pupils from the unpredictable British weather and allow the area to be used in any season as a dining or play facility.

A&S Landscape worked closely on-site with the school throughout the process, and the team worked over their standard hours to make sure that the shelter was ready before coronavirus lockdown restrictions began.

What was the result of their new shelter?

Woodlands Primary Academy was delighted with the dining and playground canopy. It means that the school now has a fantastic new outdoor space that pupils can enjoy all year round and they don’t have to depend on good weather to be able to spend more time outside. Children can eat underneath the shelter at lunchtime and fit outdoor play into their day, even when it’s raining. Teachers might even want to use it as an early years outdoor canopy. Plus, the bright red design looks brilliant and really represents the school – through matching both their colours and their love of fun and learning! A&S thought that the finished product looked great and was thrilled to have completed the project for this passionate school during such a tricky period.

A&S Landscape loved working with the staff and hope that the children will enjoy spending more time outdoors under their new shelter.

What other types of canopy can be useful for primary schools?

Entrance canopy we installed at Randlay SchoolDining and playground shelters are fantastic assets to primary schools, but what other shelters can they get great use out of?

  • Entrance canopies – these allow schools to signpost and liven up their entrances with a new shelter which can also shield any waiting visitors from the wind and rain.
  • Covered walkways – this clever canopy type keeps pupils dry when they’re moving outside between lessons at a school of multiple buildings. They can also help to promote a stronger sense of unity at institutions and can even be used by parents at pick-up and drop-off times, or as an extra storage area at the weekends.
  • Cycle stores – installing a dedicated building for cycle storage can help to de-clutter playgrounds and keep both staff bikes and pupils’ scooters safe throughout the year.

These are just a few ideas of how primary schools might want to use shelters, but whether you’re interested in these or something else entirely – like a wooden outdoor classroom – give us a call on 01743 444100 and we can discuss your canopy needs.
