The children at Westmorland School have a range of additional needs and sometimes the need to have some quiet time or time outside the classroom is particularly important in this setting. An outdoor area with a number of distinct areas and shade and shelter to go to, has meant that more options are available to the staff and pupils at this school.

Our Maxima range includes the striking Maxima Umbrella and it was decided to add two 5000mm x 5000mm structures in a lovely Lemon shade with green (RAL 6032) steelwork to the outdoor play area. They added a lovely area of shade and shelter for the children to enjoy whatever the weather.

In addition to the lovely shade and shelter offered by these new structures, is the pleasing aesthetic. The playground area with its super wooden train now has two colourful umbrellas with green steelwork to brighten it up on the dullest of days. No longer will the children have nowhere to play if the heavens open and games, lessons and chats can happen shaded from the sun’s UV rays on the warmer summer days. A perfect solution!

How can learning outside help children with their academic performance and how can schools facilitate this?

Classrooms have long been the setting of choice for a good deal of schools, but the value of outdoor learning are speedily being realised. You possibly will think that it’s not viable, especially with the unstable British weather, but with a canopy, teaching outdoors can become a reality. With many dimensions available for varying uses, any school can install a shelter to turn any outdoor space into a new kind of classroom.

For children, new environments can inspire and thrill, triggering an increased capableness to learn new information. At a young age, standard classrooms can provide little stimulation for students and educational growth can become stagnant. By exploring the use of outdoor teaching, children can find new and stimulating ways of learning. Fresh air, and the capacity to teach in a much larger space, can open up new doors to the technique that lessons are taught and the activities which can be performed.
