How does childhood obesity negatively effect children and what can schools and parents do to combat this?

Childhood obesity is arguably at its most critical and one of the more troubling concerns we face internationally. As attested by the World Health Organisation (WHO), it’s one of the most severe public health challenges of the 21st century. This global epidemic is effecting low and middle-income countries, more greatly in urban sites. Globally in 2016, the number of overweight children under the age of five was 41 million. In addition, overweight and obese children have a tendency to stay obese into adulthood and are susceptible to developing health conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular ailments while still young.

Childhood obesity and linked health issues, such as diabetes are typically preventable. On these grounds, the WHO prioritises the prevention of these conditions in youth, especially because poor dietary habits and a inactive lifestyle are among the major causes of noncommunicable diseases. These conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and specific types of cancer, substantially lead to the global pressure of disease, death and disability.

Further, many important studies indicate that overweight and obesity in childhood can negatively influence a child’s executive function and academic performance. Children who are obese experience a greater level of bullying amongst peers as well as experiences that lower their esteem, hence posing a risk of developing underdeveloped social and emotional factors in children. Social and emotional factors and poor academic experiences that can impact a child through to adulthood.
