What is RAAC concrete?
Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) is a cheaper alternative to standard concrete which was used commonly between the 1950s and 1990s.
The main difference between the two types of concrete is that RAAC is aerated and so has ‘bubbles’ within the formation.
How many schools are affected?
The Department of Education has said that a total of 147 school buildings in England are known to use RAAC concrete. Of this total, 56 are at risk of a sudden collapse and action has already been taken to mitigate this risk.
